PERUNOVICH AND SHEPARD REPEAT AS NCHC OFFENSIVE DEFENSEMAN AND GOALTENDER OF THE YEAR AWARD WINNERS

Different season. Same results.

University of Minnesota Duluth junior Scott Perunovich held on to the title as National Collegiate Collegiate Hockey Association's Offensive Defenseman of the Year for the third consecutive season while his teammate, senior Hunter Shepard, laid claim to his second league Goaltender of the Year Award in as many years.

Perunovich, who earlier this week was announced as the co-recipient of the NCHC's Three Star Award, reigned as the conference's leading scorer (league games) this past winter -- the first defenseman to ever do so -- with 32 points on four goals and a league-best 28 assists. The two-time All-American and 2017-18  NCHC Rookie of the Year out of Hibbing, Minn., also topped the conference in power play points (18) while ranking fifth in blocked shots (43) and eighth in plus-minus rating (+12). As a junior, Perunovich earned all-conference first team recognition for the third time as a collegian, something only one other Bulldog (Jack Connolly in the WCHA from 2010-12) had ever done. He's now the first individual to ever win any NCHC major award three or more times. A Top 10 Finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, he also was selected the  NCHC Defenseman of the Week on five different occasions and was eague's Player of the Month for February .

Perunovich, the NCHC'S first three-time winner of any major conference award, is also up for NCHC Player of the Year, which will be unveiled this Thursday.

Shepard, a two-time All-NCHC first team honoree (2017-19), was the only league puckstopper to play every minute of his team's games this winter. In league play, the 2018-19 All-American and Cohasset, Minn., native ranked first in wins (he was 17-5-2), and second in both goals against average (2.13) and saves percentage (.923). Shepard was bestowed with NCHC Goaltender of the Week honors a league-high six times in 2019-20 and was the NCHC Goaltender of the Month for January.  He holds the distinction of being the only UMD goalie to ever secure all-conference first team status on more than one occasion.
