OXFORD, Ohio. – The University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey team picked up their ninth win on the year beating Miami University, 2-1, and earned head coach
Scott Sandelin his 400
th collegiate win. His is the 33rd active Division I head coach to reach the milestone. UMD improved to 9-5-2 on the season while the Redhawks fall to 4-11-2.
"Good win for our guys," said head coach
Scott Sandelin. "We kind of went through a little bit of adversity to start the third period with the major kill. It was nice to have a two goal lead. Our guys did a great job with that and we closed it out. They kept fighting and made it tough on us, but we'll take the three points. "
Sophomore goaltender
Ryan Fanti got his 13th nod on the season and his seventh win, stopping 14 of 15 shots on the night. He now sits with a 7-4-2 record on the year, carrying a .907 save percentage with a 2.28 goals against average. MU goaltender Ludvig Persson stopped 25 of 27 on the evening.
In terms of scoring, it was quiet for almost the entire first period. That was until the final 11.0 seconds of the period when junior forward
Cole Koepke decided to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead into the locker rooms. After getting the puck down into the Redhawks zone, junior forward
Tanner Laderoute pressed MU's defenseman and forced a turnover. The puck came to junior forward
Jesse Jacques, who zipped a pass across the zone to Koepke, who rifled a shot top shelf past Persson.
The second opened up to more of the same, with the difference being sophomore forward
Quinn Olson netting one with 6:08 to go in the period. After gaining the zone on an odd man rush, senior forward
Nick Swaney dropped the puck to junior forward
Noah Cates. N. Cates then dished a pass to Olson, who corralled it and shelfed it past Persson's glove hand for a 2-0 lead.
It looked as though Fanti would get his first career shutout, until 3:43 to go in the game. The Redhawks were applying ample pressure against UMD. A puck popped out to MU's defenseman who took a shot from up top. The rebound came out the Redhawks forward Michael Holland, who beat an outstretched Fanti to cut the Bulldogs lead to one. UMD, however, held out and claimed the victory, 2-1.
"I thought it was a good team win. These points are important coming around in this second half of the year," said junior forward
Cole Koepke. "Miami is a great team, they played a hard game against us. It's never easy coming in here and playing against them. It was a good job out of our guys to battle out and kind of weather that last storm at the end. "
Koepke and Olson each finished with a goal, while Jacques, N. Cates and Swaney all finished with an assist. Koepke and Swaney each finished with eight shots, sophomore forward
Ben Almquist finished with three shots while freshman defenseman
Wyatt Kaiser, senior forward
Koby Bender, junior forward
Jackson Cates and Olson all finished with two shots.
The Bulldogs look to complete the weekend series sweep tomorrow, taking on the Redhawks at 4 PM.
