The newly minted Seattle Kraken of the National Hockey League (NHL) announced key hires on the hockey operations side today. Former UMD Men's Hockey Bulldog, Hobey Baker Finalist, NHL alum and UMD Athletic Hall of Famer, Norm Maciver, was named Director of Player Personnel for the Kraken.
Maciver heads to Seattle with the many perspectives of an NHL team member: Player, assistant coach (NHL and American Hockey League), scout, management executive and getting traded as a player four times. Maciver spent the last 14 seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, who won three Cups, in 2010, 2013 and 2015. Maciver played defenseman in 500 NHL games for seven teams over 12 seasons.
"I am excited about the prospect of building something from the ground up," said Maciver. "I'm so glad to be able to help meet the challenge of building a team in an ever-evolving league."

Deftly patrolled the blue line for UMD teams that claimed a pair of Western Collegiate Hockey Association regular season and playoff championships (1983-85), earned three NCAA playoff berths (1982-85), and a rolled up a 199-50-9 overall record during his four-year stay ... became just the fourth Bulldog (at the time) to attain All-American distinction on more than one occasion (1984-85 and 1985-86)) and the first to land All-WCHA acclaim three times (first team in 1984-85 and 1985-86, second team in 1983-84) ... was a 1985-86 Hobey Baker Memorial Award finalist ... set Bulldog records for career assists (152) and goals by a defenseman in one game (4 vs. Providence College on Dec. 28, 1984) ... left the UMD program as its second all-time scoring leader among defensemen (191 points in 165 games) ... was bestowed with UMD's Outstanding Male Senior Athlete Award for 1985-86 ... signed with the New York Rangers for the 1986-87 season, commencing a 12-year National Hockey League career ...did done NHL time with Hartford (1988-89), Edmonton (1989-92), Ottawa (1992-95), Pittsburgh (1995), Winnipeg (1995-96) and Phoenix (1996-98) ... topped the expansion Ottawa Senators in scoring in 1992-93.
