DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Duluth hockey team had another hard-fought battle in their loss to No. 6 St. Cloud State University, 1-0, in overtime. The Bulldogs are now 6-5-2 on the year while the Huskies improve to 9-4-0 on the season.
"Another tough loss," said head coach
Scott Sandelin. "We did some things better tonight. Our 5-on-5 was better tonight. Again, our power play didn't score. It was another hard fought game between these two teams. Right now, we're not finding the puck luck and we're not finding enough to win hockey games."
Freshman goalie
Zach Stejskal got his second nod in his collegiate career, putting up a stellar performance of 20 saves on 21 shots.
"As a goalie, you have to stay in it the whole time," said freshman goalie
Zach Stejskal. "It's shot after shot and you just have to stay focused for every shot. You never know what's going to come. I thought I did a good job today doing that."
SCSU goalie David Hrenak stood on his head tonight, putting up 28 saves with a shutout.
It was a fairly quiet first period, with UMD outshooting the Huskies 11-6 and grabbing a chance or two. The story was the same for the second period with shots going in favor of SCSU by a total of 9-8. Things started to heat up in the third with chances coming from both sides, but each goalie stood tall and keep things even keel to force things into an extra frame.
The Huskies put the only goal of the night away in 3-on-3 overtime. The Bulldogs dumped a puck into SCSU's zone where Hrenak corralled and settled it for defenseman Nick Perbix to grab. He swung behind the net and glided up to the Bulldogs' zone. He faked a look to one of his teammates, made a nifty move to get past the defenseman and shoved the puck in on Stejskal's five-hole.
UMD finished the evening with 28 shots while the Huskies finished with 21. Stejskal now carries a 1-1-0 record on the season, carries a 1.45 goals against average with a .935 save percentage. Junior forward
Cole Koepke finished with a team high five shots, while senior defenseman
Matt Anderson had four and senior forward
Nick Swaney and junior forward
Noah Cates each had three.
"It was a better effort from our group, we were happy with that," said junior captain
Noah Cates. "We were tightening up some things defensively and were being a little harder to play offensively, but we have to learn how to win these one-goal games."
The Bulldogs will travel to Miami, Ohio to take on Miami University (OH) on Jan. 15-16.
