NO. 5 BULLDOGS SUFFER FIRST LOSS OF SEASON TO NO. 3 MICHIGAN

The No. 5 University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs fell to the No. 3 University of Michigan Wolverines by a score of 5-1 on Friday evening in Duluth. The loss is the first of the season for the Bulldogs and gives them a 2-1 overall record on the year.

Minnesota Duluth forward Jesse Jacques got the lone goal for the Bulldogs off assists from Koby Bender and Kobe Roth. For Jacques, it's his first goal of the season. Roth's assist gives him the team-lead in points with three, while Bender tallied his second point of the season. Sophomore goaltender Zach Stejskal got the start in net and made 24 saves on 29 Wolverine shots.

UMD dominated the first ten minutes of play, outshooting the Wolverines 10-1 at one point. The Bulldogs would strike first midway through the first frame. Following a save on Roth, Bender pocked the puck from behind the net into the slot to a waiting Jacques. The Hermantown, Minn., native buried the puck behind Michigan net minder Erik Portillo to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead.

Just five minutes later, UMD captain Noah Cates was charged with a five-minute major and a game misconduct for direct contact to the head. In the last minute of the first period, Luke Hughes took a cross seem feed and one-timed the puck past Stejskal to tie the game at one. The goal came on Cates's major penalty. The teams would head to the first intermission nodded up at one goal apiece.

Six minutes into the second period, Brendan Brisson found himself alone in the slot and beat Stejskal to the blocker side to give the Wolverines the lead. Eight minutes later, Matty Berniers added to Michigan's lead with an even-strength tally. Michigan took a 3-1 advantage to the third period.

UMD would get a power play opportunity just three minutes into the final frame. However, a shorthanded breakaway goal from Garrett Van Wyhe opened the game for the Wolverines and made the score 4-1. Michigan would add one more power play goal with under a minute to play, making the final score 5-1 in favor of the Wolverines.

In the game, shots were 29-29. The Bulldogs were 0-5 on the power play with seven shots, while Michigan went 2-3 with the man-advantage and tallied six shots. With the win, Michigan will meet No. 1 Minnesota State-Mankato tomorrow afternoon at 4:07 PM for the Ice Breaker championship. The Bulldogs will face No. 10 Providence College at 7:37 PM tomorrow evening. Live stats for both games can be found here, while live video of the UMD game can be found here.
