DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey program fell late to Colorado College on Thursday evening, 2-1. The Bulldogs now carry a 12-8-2 record on the season.
"We're getting a lot of shots these last couple games, but I would like to simplify it," said junior forward
Noah Cates. "Get a body at the net, get shots from the point, get traffic there cause you can't stop what you can't see. Second and third opportunities around the net – I think we just need to simplify it."
Sophomore goaltender
Ryan Fanti was in between the pipes this evening, stopping 12 shots while facing 14. Fanti now carries 9-6-2 record on the year, with a .906 save percentage and a 2.28 goals against average. Tigers goaltender Dominic Basse stopped 42 of 43 shots seen tonight.
UMD came out hot in the first period, firing a total of 17 shots on goal and limiting CC to just two. The Bulldogs took the lead early on in the second period when senior forward
Nick Swaney fired in his 10th of the season. After a scrum in the Tigers' corner, freshman defenseman
Wyatt Kaiser kept the puck in the zone and found Swaney. Swaney carried the puck across the slot and fired it past Basse's glove side. UMD finished the second period with 12 shots, a total of 29 while keeping the Tigers to a total of nine through 40 minutes of play.
CC found its way onto the board 6:33 into the final frame in the closing seconds of the man advantage. Forward Mathew Gleason swung around the net and fired a shot low short side that beat Fanti for a 1-1 game. The Tigers took the lead with 2:29 to go in the game. After getting it deep into UMD's zone, the puck came to forward Troy Conzo. Conzo took a shot that snuck by Fanti, scoring the game winner.
Swaney finished with a goal while Kaiser had an assist. Junior forward
Jackson Cates finished with a team high six shots while senior forward
Kobe Roth and junior forward
Cole Koepke finished with five shots each. Senior defenseman
Matt Anderson finished with three blocks and junior defenseman
Hunter Lellig finished with two.
"We had some shots, we had some good opportunities, but we need to generate more second and third chances. In front of the net, we need to get more bodies there and we have to have guys that are a little bit more ready," said UMD Head Coach
Scott Sandelin. "It's just disappointing. I think our guys did a lot of good things as far as the way we wanted to play. The end result was we couldn't build on the lead and they hung around."
The Bulldogs will host St. Cloud State University on Feb. 27 at 7:00 PM at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, Minn.
