The University of Minnesota Duluth defeated St. Cloud State University, 69-60, to capture their second straight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division title. UMD finishes the season 10-1 overall (9-1 NSIC) and SCSU finishes 10-4 overall (7-3 NSIC).
The Bulldogs started the game off struggling to find their shooting touch, hitting just 32.3% (10-31) from the field and 14.3% (1-8) on 3-pointers in the half. SCSU on the other hand continued their shooting success from last night's game, especially from behind the 3-point line, shooting 40% (4-10) in the first half.
UMD went into halftime trailing 33-25.
The Bulldogs came out in the second half on fire, putting their first half shooting woes behind them where they shot 55.8% from the field and went 3-4 on 3-pointers in the half. The fourth quarter however is where UMD really started to pick up steam starting the quarter trailing by eight points, but then proceeded to go on a 24-9 run which propelled them to a win and another NSIC North title.
Overall, UMD shot 42.9% (24-56) from the field, 33.3% (4-12) on 3-pointers, out-rebounded the Huskies 33-23 and won the turnover battle (16-11). SCSU shot 44.2% (23-52) from the field and 31.8% (7-22) on 3-pointers.
Junior forward
Brooke Olson led the Bulldogs in scoring with 26 points, 13 rebounds and four steals. Senior guard
Ann Simonet finished with 11 points, three assists and three steals. Senior forward
Payton Kahl finished with 10 points and four rebounds and sophomore guard
Taytum Rhoades finished with six points and five rebounds.
The Bulldogs will play at the NSIC Tournament in Sioux Falls as the No. 1 seed in the north division. The tournament starts on Feb. 25 and will be played at the Sanford Pentagon.
