The University of Minnesota Duluth women's softball team kicked off their midweek trip to Minot, ND today with two wins against the University of Mary. The Bulldogs would outscore the Marauders by a combined score of 20-2.
Game 1:
Lauren Oberle started off the scoring for the Bulldogs, hitting a homerun in the top of the third inning to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. The UMary Marauders responded with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to level up the score at one apiece, but would be unable to score again for the remainder of the game.
Freshman Dea DeLeon got on the scoresheet at the top of the fourth inning to put the Bulldogs back in the lead before Jessica Bren and Emma Frost scored a pair of unearned runs to push UMD's lead to 4-1.Â
A three-run homerun from -- who else -- Jordyn Thomas, who brought Kiana Bender and Lauren Oberle across home with her, in the top of the fifth inning gave the Bulldogs a 7-1 lead. An RBI single from Thomas in the sixth inning gave Lauren Oberle her third run of the day. Later in the inning, Taylor Koehnen flied out for the RBI single, which let Kat Burkhardt advance to third and Kiana Bender cross home. Jordyn Thomas scored on a throwing error in the same play and gave the Bulldogs a 10-1 lead which would remain the final result.
Game 2:
Jessica Bren started the scoring for the Bulldogs early in the first inning, hitting an RBI single that allowed Lauren Oberle to score. Just two plays later, Julia Gronholz flied out to center for the RBI that brought Taylor Koehnen past home to make the score 2-0 early in the ballgame. An RBI single from Taylor Koehnen allowed freshman Dea DeLeon to score her second run of the day, bringing UMD's lead to 3-0 in the second inning.
The Bulldogs would bring the heat in the third inning. First, freshman Kelly Swank homered to center field to make it a 4-0 ballgame. Four plays later, Emily Potts crossed home off an RBI single from Lauren Oberle thanks to a throwing error by the Marauders. An RBI double from Jessica Bren would see Lauren Oberle and Kat Burkhardt both score unearned runs. The Bulldogs would close out the inning 7-0.Â
Freshman pitcher Corrie Weise would pitch a no-hitter through the third inning, and only then allowing the Marauders to make one hit at the top of the fourth inning. UMary wouldn't get on the scoreboard until scoring an RBI single at the top of the fifth inning.
Later in the fifth inning, however, Jessica Bren would score a three-run homer to left field that saw Makenna Burslie and Lauren Oberle score as well. Bren's homerun would make the score 10-1 in favor of the Bulldogs and see the game to a close.
The Bulldogs now sit at 8-4 on the season. They will stay in Minot tomorrow to take on the Minot State University Beavers in a doubleheader starting at 10:00 AM.
