Former Minnesota Duluth defenseman Neal Pionk has signed a four-year contract extension with the Winnipeg Jets, the team announced on Wednesday afternoon.Â

Pionk, a native of Hermantown, Minn., played in 82 games for UMD from 2015-2017. During his two seasons with the Bulldogs, Pionk notched 11 goals and 40 assists for 51 points. Additionally, Pionk posted an impressive +35 rating over his career in Duluth. During the 2016-17 season, Pionk earned Second Team All-NCHC honors, while also helping UMD to an NCHC Championship, and an appearance in the National Championship game. Pionk's outstanding play also earned him a spot on the NCAA All-Tournament Team.

Since moving on from UMD, Pionk has been a dynamic offensive defenseman in the NHL. Following UMD's 16-17 season, Pionk signed an NHL contract with the New York Rangers. In June of 2019, he was traded to the Jets. Since arriving in Winnipeg in 2019, Pionk has pieced together back-to-back 30+ point seasons, while also notching a +16 rating in the process. In 226 NHL games, Pionk has recorded 16 goals and 101 assists for 117 points. Pionk's deal with Winnipeg will run through the 2024-25 season.
