On Monday afternoon, the University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey team announced their team captains for the 2021-22 season. For the second straight year,
Noah Cates will don the captaincy for the Bulldogs, while
Kobe Roth,
Louie Roehl, and
Tanner Laderoute will serve as assistant captains.
A native of Stillwater, Minn., Cates previously served as team captain during the 2020-21 campaign. On the season, the senior forward secured five goals and 14 assists for 19 points and helped UMD to their fourth straight Frozen Four appearance. For his on-ice performance, Cates was named Second Team All-NCHC. During 102 total games with the Bulldogs, Cates has tallied 28 goals and 47 assists for 75 points. Additionally, Cates has an impressive +23 rating during his career in Duluth. During the 2019-20 season, Cates received First Team All-NCHC recognition.
For the second straight season, veteran defenseman
Louie Roehl will serve as an assistant captain for UMD. During the 2020-21 season, Roehl played in all 28 games for the Bulldogs, while notching three assists and a +1 rating on the year. One of the most experienced players on UMD's roster, Roehl has appeared in 142 career games with Minnesota Duluth. During UMD's third national championship run in 2018-19, Roehl posted a +14 rating in 42 games on the season.
Coming off a career best 23-point season in 2020-21,
Kobe Roth has been named an assistant captain for UMD. The skilled forward had a breakout season in which he tallied 13 goals and 10 assists in just 28 games. Perhaps more important than the point totals were Roth's team leading four game-winning goals during the 2020-21 season. Additionally, Roth finished top 3 on the roster with a +10 rating on the season.
Also accepting captaincy duties for the first time is forward
Tanner Laderoute. During the 2020-21 season, the Edmonton, Alberta native played in all 28 games for UMD, while securing three goals and seven assists for ten points. For his career, Laderoute has chipped in 18 goals and 20 assists for 38 points in 97 games. He is also a three-time member of the NCHC All-Academic team.
The Bulldogs will kick off their season at Bemidji State on Friday, October 8.
