UMD MEN'S HOCKEY OPENS SEASON WITH AN ELECTRIC OT WIN

The Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs secured the win in their season opener against the Arizona State Sun Devils with a game-winning goal in overtime from transfer Derek Daschke. UMD finished the night 3-2 to start them with 1-0 overall record.

The Bulldogs that notched goals were Dominic James, freshman Isaac Howard, and Derek Daschke. Quinn Olson recorded two assist, along with Aiden Dubinsky, Blake Biondi, and Tanner Laderoute tallying one assist each. Dubinsky's assist gave him his first career point as a Bulldog.

The first period was a slow start for Minnesota Duluth. The Sun Devils slipped the puck past Zach Stejskal and got on the board first. In the net Stejskal saved 11 shots on goal in the first period. Ultimately, UMD was held scoreless in the first.

Just after the halfway point of the second period, Dubinsky setup  Olson to send a pass across the ice to James. James with a quick one touch sent the puck flying into the goal, tying the game up 1-1. On ASU's last power play in the second period they were held to only one shot on goal that was stopped by Stejskal.

Just one minute into the game ASU forward Lukas Sillinger got past the Bulldog defense and took the lead 2-1. The Bulldogs went on a power play at 3:01. Biondi made a shot up the middle but it was deflected. Olson flicked the deflected puck just right of the goal to Howard who tipped it in to tie the score again at 2-2.

As both teams couldn't break through, they were forced into 3-on-3 overtime. Off the second face off an ASU player tripped giving UMD a 3-on-2 advantage. Daschke skated the puck up the ice making a cross to Laderoute. Daschke then set himself up in the center, where Laderoute made a perfect pass back and Daschke sunk the puck in the back of the net to secure the win 3-2.

Up next Minnesota Duluth and Arizona State will be back in action tomorrow Oct. 2 for an afternoon puck-drop at 4 p.m.
