UMD MEN'S HOCKEY DROPS GAME 1 AGAINST THE BADGERS

Box Score No. 10 Minnesota Duluth falls short to the Wisconsin Badger at home 5-2. The loss was UMD's first at home and gives them an overall record of 2-3. 

The two Bulldogs to score in game one versus Wisconsin were Luke Loheit and Blake Biondi. Both were power play goals and Biondi's was his first of the year. Notching assists on the goals were Ben Steeves, Carter Loney, Isaac Howard, Derek Daschke

In the first period, the Badgers took a penalty for tripping at 9:49 giving the Bulldogs a one man advantage. Loney made a pass up the side to Steeves who waited patiently for space to clear. When the opportunity opened up Steeves passed it to the crease where Loheit was waiting and flicked the puck past the Badgers' goalie. With the power play goal Loheit started the game off with a 1-0 lead for the Bulldogs. Later in the period Wisconsin found the back of the net twice to lead at the end of the first 2-1. 

The Badgers took a late penalty in the first period to put UMD on a power play starting the second period. As the Bulldogs were looking to tie it back up and on a power play, an opportunity presented itself. Daschke made a cross on the blue line to Howard who ripped a shot from the right. Biondi tipped Howard's shot in the goal to tie it back up 2-2.  At 15:03, Wisconsin netted another goal to take the lead again and end the second period 3-2. 

Going into the third period down a goal, UMD looked to tie it back up. The Bulldogs were faced with a high sticking call and were forced to kill off a five-minute penalty. On the power play the Badgers scored their fourth goal. UMD was given two more power play opportunities but could not get past Wisconsin's defense. As a last minute effort to even the score up UMD pulled the goalie at 2:59. As UMD lost a battle for the puck in the corner, the Badger's got an empty net goal, giving them a 5-2 lead. With one more power play opportunity, the Bulldogs fought in the last minutes of the play but were unsuccessful. 

Up Next Minnesota Duluth will be back for another game against Wisconsin tomorrow Oct. 22 for a 6:07 p.m. puck drop.
