UMD MEN'S HOCKEY WITH A BIG WIN AGAINST THE BIG RED

Box Score Minnesota Duluth closed out the series with a 4-2 win and a sweep over Cornell. UMD now sits with a 4-4 overall record and a 2-2 record at home.

Notching two goals on the night was Dominic James, along with Wyatt Kaiser and Blake Biondi recording one each. Quinn Olson tallied two assists on James and Biondi's goal. Getting one assist each on the night was Wyatt Kaiser, Aiden Dubinsky, and James.

To start the first period off, the Bulldogs went on a power play but couldn't get anything from it. At 14:41 the puck was in the UMD defensive zone. Dubinsky made a pass from the slot up to James who was waiting at the blue line and  went on a breakaway where he was faced with just the goalie. James flicked the puck in the top corner and got the Bulldogs on the board 1-0. Just 40 seconds later, the Big Red tied it up 1-1. At 9:49 Kaiser brought the puck up unassisted from center ice and slipped it in the corner to take the lead back 2-1. The Bulldogs led in shots in the first period 10-5 and killed off one penalty.

As UMD went into the second period with a one goal lead, they entered the period looking to extend it further. The Bulldogs took a penalty at 6:41. Cornell was in the offensive zone and taking shots. Loheit made a block near the blue line where he then picked it up and went on an odd man rush with James up the ice. Just seconds after UMD got out of the box, Loheit made the pass to James and he sank it, putting UMD up 3-1. Late in the second period Cornell took a penalty for a face off violation. James was set up on the blue line and made a pass to Olson who took a shot from the face-off circle. On Olson's rebound Biondi back-handed it past Ian Shane with one second left in the period. Biondi's power play goal put the Bulldogs up 4-2 at the end of the second period. UMD held scoreless in the second, despite being out-shot 15-5.

Going into the third period, Cornell was itching to close the three goal lead. At 17:37 Ben Berard scored Cornell's second goal of the night. The Bulldogs took a penalty for an open ice check. With a couple major saves by Zach Stejskal the Bulldogs successfully killed it off.

During tonight's game UMD killed off all six penalties kills they were faced with. On the weekend, Stejskal made 58 saves and only allowed four goals.

UP NEXT Minnesota Duluth will take the road to face-off against Colorado College in their first conference match-up Nov. 4-5.
