The undefeated No. ? University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team improved to 6-0 Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 win over Western Collegiate Hockey Association member Minnesota State University, Mankato at AMSOIL Arena. The Bulldogs became the first team since the 2006-07 squad to run a 6-0 record from the start, and now have the second-longest winning streak to start a season in program history.
"They're tough, their goalie was great to make a lot of big saves in the second half," said fifth-year Taylor Anderson after the game. "I think it's still early, so just learning how to click with our linemates is definitely going to be a big thing going into the off weekend and just learning to read each other better, and just continue to get more shots. I think we had a ton of them. We can definitely be better at getting them in the back of the net."
UMD wasted no time getting on the board in game two, and buried two pucks in the net 23 seconds apart in the first period. Anderson took a pass from Kylie Hanley at mid-ice and ripped it from the bottom of the left circle at 4:57 to put the Bulldogs up 1-0, her third goal of the season. Less than a half a minute later, Mannon McMahon threaded a puck from behind the net to Gabby Krause on the bottom of the right circle, and Krause's one-timer beat MSU Alexa Berg short-side to push UMD's lead to 2-0 at 5:20.
The Bulldogs never rested on offense, and peppered Berg with 40 shots on goal. UMD's defense smothered the Mavericks from there, holding them to just 10 shots in the entire game. For her 10-save effort, Emma Soderberg earned her 13th career shutout – the senior goaltender is now in a tie for fourth all-time with former teammate Maddie Rooney for the most saves in a career.
The Bulldogs will have next weekend off before heading to Columbus, Ohio on Oct. 21-22 to take on top-ranked Ohio State University in a rematch of the 2022 NCAA National Championship game. Game times for the Friday-Saturday series are 5:00 p.m. Friday and 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
