BULLDOGS COME UP BIG IN 1-1 DRAW WITH #13 MINNESOTA STATE

The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team came up big today with their 1-1 draw with  #13 Minnesota State Mankato. The Bulldogs were able to keep tame the Mavericks offense, only allowing one goal and five shots on goal. The last time the Mavericks and Bulldogs tied was in 2017 when Minnesota State won the shootout 8-7. It was a game of heart and effort, with both the Bulldogs and Mavericks playing in an all-out battle.

"When you play one of the best teams in the league and make them play to their limit that's a good showing for you, regardless of points or statistics. We showed today that we can play with any and every team in the league and be successful," said head Coach Greg Cane. "Statistically, it didn't matter today because it boiled down to heart and passion" it was a big point but an even bigger moment"

Early into the first half the Mavericks were awarded a direct free kick just on top of the box where they attempted a trick play but were unsuccessful as Mankato's shot went high.
Several minutes later UMD goalkeeper Jenny Norris made her first save of the game. The Mankato forward was able to turn the corner, but UMD defense came up big by clearing the save out of Bulldog territory.

With eight minutes left in the first half, UMD's freshman Myra Moorjani was able to earn a corner kick for the Bulldogs. Senior midfielder Lauren Singstock took the corner kick and placed it perfectly to Junior Rachel Boelke's head, scoring her first goal of the season and the first goal of the game.

Minnesota State came out firing in the second half, putting up three shots on goal within the first five minutes. The Bulldogs would answer with an offense of their own when senior Hannah Caldwell cut the ball to the middle from the left side to strike a ball that would force the Mavericks goalkeeper to reach for a diving save. This would keep the Bulldogs at a 1-0 lead.

The Mavericks scored their first goal of the day with 12 minutes left in the second half. Minnesota State would control the last few minutes, testing the Bulldog defense.
Even though the Bulldogs couldn't get one more on the scoreboard, they were able to finish the game without conceding another goal.

Bulldogs return to Malosky Stadium on October 23rd against Northern State for their second to last home game of the season. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
