Minnesota Duluth split the series with Omaha after a 3-2 overtime win. With the split, the Bulldogs secured two conference points on the weekend series. UMD is now 6-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Recording two goals on the night was freshman
Ben Steeves, along with
Quinn Olson who notched one goal. On the assists,
Derek Daschke notched two and
Owen Gallatin,
Carter Loney, and
Matthew Thiessen each recorded one. Thiessen's assist was his first point of the season and second in his career.
In the first period the Bulldogs came off strong against the Mavericks. At 13:59 Daschke and Gallatin were making passes back and forth at the blue line. After Gallatin ripped a shot on net, Steeves picked up the rebound to flick it and get the first goal of the night. UMD out shot UNO 14-5 in the first. As the Bulldogs had killed off their first penalty, they took another at the end of the period that would put them a man down starting the second.
Going into the second with only a one goal lead and a man down, the Bulldogs put in the work to kill off the penalty. UMD made a break away and had a short handed shot attempt that was blocked. The Bulldogs only allowed them two shots during their power play. Shortly after the successful penalty kill, Omaha got the puck past Thiessen to tie the game up 1-1 at 13:53. After UMD successfully killed off another penalty, they went on a two-minute power play. Off the face-off Daschke set Steeves up with a pass on the right wing. Steeves made a one timer, finding the back of the net and taking the lead back. His power-play goal put UMD at 2-1 with the Mavericks. At the end of the second UMD still led shots on goal 14-11.
During the third, UMD held control of the puck and played a tough game for a majority of the period out-shooting Omaha 13-6.. With 1:39 left in the period, UNO was looking to tie it up and take UMD into overtime. Eight seconds into the man-advantage play, Omaha made a shot from the side of the goal that slipped under Thiessen and put the score back to a tie and forced the game to go into overtime.
With just five-minutes of play left the Bulldogs were itching to close the night with a win. The Mavericks brought the puck up the crease looking for a shot but lost it. Thiessen passed the loose puck up to Olson who skated the length of the ice and sent a rocket into the top corner. Olson sealed the deal for the Bulldogs 3-2 and recorded his first goal of the season.
Thiessen made a total of 42 saves on the night and the Bulldogs killed off all four penalties called against them.
UP NEXT Minnesota Duluth will travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. for a series against Western Michigan next weekend Nov. 18-19.
