THE MATCHUP The Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs will be back at AMSOIL arena after their weekend off to face-off with the Colorado College Tigers for the second time this season. UMD traveled to Colorado Springs earlier in November for their first conference series. The Bulldogs dropped the first game 5-0 but came back on Saturday night with a 3-1 win to split the series. During game two against CC the Bulldogs were down by one in the first period but went on a power play. With assists from
Owen Gallatin and
Derek Daschke,
Ben Steeves put one in the back of the net as the power play was nearing an end, and tied the game up. In the third period Gallatin scored the go-ahead goal with assists from
Tanner Laderoute and Daschke. With just 36 seconds left and an empty net,
Blake Biondi sealed the deal with a goal from across the ice. UMD continues to hold the all-time record against the Tigers 39-13-6.
LAST TIME OUT UMD is coming off a series split with No. 14 Western Michigan. The Bulldogs came out victorious 5-4 during Friday's game. The Broncos then bounced back late in the third period to take the lead from UMD. The weekend series against WMU was filled with many firsts for the Bulldogs.
Cole Spicer and
Kyle Bettens both recorded their first collegiate goals, along with
Jack Smith who tallied his first collegiate point on Spicer's goal.
Darian Gotz scored the game winning goal on Friday as he was coming out of the box, and recorded his first goal of the season. Friday's win was also the first upset of the season for UMD.
HOME SWEET HOME Minnesota Duluth has had success this season with their games at home. The Bulldogs have gone 5-3 at home, with two series sweeps. Their last win at home was against Omaha in a thrilling OT game.
IN THE CREASE Senior
Matthew Thiessen has now seen action in nine games. In the last series against WMU, Thiessen made 67 saves. While in the crease, he has made a total of 194 saves, while only allowing 18 goals, six of which were power play goals, and one short handed goal. Thiessen now has a season save percentage of .915 and goals against average of 2.25. With those numbers, Thiessen is ranked third in the NCHC and 13th in the nation for goals against. He is also ranked fifth in the conference for save percentage.
DYNAMIC DEFENSE Back on defense, Gallatin and Daschke have not only been blocking shots but putting up points. Against the Broncos Daschke and Gallatin tallied three and two assists, respectively. The two Bulldogs have both notched ten points from two goals and eight assists, and are tied for second on the team with points. In 14 games, Daschke has blocked 21 shots, averaging 1.5 per game.
CAN'T STOP STEEVES Freshman
Ben Steeves has recorded 11 points and now leads the team in points. Against WMU Steeves recorded four points, with two goals and two assists. Steeves has had four games where he has recorded two points. With just 42 shots on goal, he is averaging .190%. The freshman is ranked fifth in the NCHC and 11th in the nation for goals per game and with his three power play goals, he is ranked sixth in the conference and ninth nationally.
TIGERS ON THE PENALTY KILL In conference play, the Tigers have a penalty kill percentage of .905. Up until this point in the season the Tigers have allowed 42 goals with 10 being power play goals.
TIGERS' GOALTENDING Colorado College has played Kaidan Mbereko in 12 of their 14 games. Having started in nine games, Mbereko has a record of 3-5-1. He has made a total of 229 saves, while only allowing 20 goals for a save percentage of .920. Of the 20 goals allowed, five were power play and three were short handed goals. His save percentage ranks him third in the NCHC and 26th nationally.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS In this year's campaign, Colorado College has gone 5-8-1 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play. The last time the Tiger's played they were at home facing off with St. Cloud State. The Huskies swept CC with a 3-1 contest Friday and a 5-0 shutout Saturday night. Scoring the lone goal during the series was Noah Laba. The Tigers have recorded 37 goals and average 2.6 per game. With 17, CC is ranked third in the NCHC and sixth in the nation for power play goals. Laba has scored seven goals and notched four assists for 11 points, and continues to lead the team in points. Colorado's assist leader is still Bryan Yoon with nine. Back on defense, junior Nicklas Andrews has blocked leads with 21 blocked shots and seven points.
