Box Score Minnesota Duluth came out victorious Saturday night 3-1 against the Colorado College Tigers. UMD's win secured a split on the series and gave them their first conference win. The Bulldogs now have an overall record of 5-5, and conference record of 1-1.
Scoring for the Bulldogs was
Ben Steeves,
Owen Gallatin, and
Blake Biondi. Notching two assists on the night was
Derek Daschke, along with
Tanner Laderoute and Gallatin each tallying one.
Matthew Thiessen made 34 saves on Saturday, and a total of 69 saves during the series.
The Bulldogs had a quick start and found the back of the net just 1:15 into the game. UMD's goal was then waived off as there was a high stick on the play. The Bulldogs went on the power play at 8:43, where the Tiger's were able to get one pass and take the lead 1-0. The Bulldogs had one power play opportunity but couldn't get one in the net. The Tigers led the period in shots on goal 8-5.
Going into the second period, the Bulldogs were called for a protocol violation but UMD killed off the penalty. The Tigers were called for an interference penalty to put the Bulldogs on a power play. On the power play, Steeves made a pass from the right wing to Daschke in the middle who passed it to Gallatin in the left wing. Gallatin passed back over to Steeves who ripped a one timer past the Tigers goalie to tie it up 1-1. UMD held the Tigers scoreless in the second. The Bulldogs killed off their two penalties in the second and were 1-3 on power play attempts. At the end of the second, UMD out shot Colorado College 24-13.
UMD went into the third period tied with the Tigers 1-1. Both teams took a penalty at 12:34 to make play 4v4, but neither team could get a goal out of it. With just under six minutes left in the game, UMD took a penalty but successfully killed it off. The period was coming to an end and both teams were looking to take the lead. As Laderoute was on the left wing, he made a long pass from the corner of the blue line to Gallatin in the corner of the right wing goal line. Gallatin made a back-handed pass in front of the goal. The puck slipped under the goalies pads and the Bulldogs took the lead 2-1 with just 1:41 left in the game. The Tigers pulled their goalie in a last minute effort to tie it up. Colorado College tried to make a pass from the back of the net to the front of the crease but Biondi was waiting and sent a rocket across the ice to score an empty net goal. The empty net goal put UMD ahead 3-1 and sealed the deal.
UP NEXT Minnesota Duluth will be back at AMSOIL Arena next weekend Nov. 11-12 for a series against Omaha.
