THE MATCHUP No. 20 Minnesota Duluth is back in Duluth for a conference series against the Omaha Mavericks. The puck will drop for game one on Nov. 11 at 7:07 p.m. In the all-time series against the Mavericks UMD leads 27-12-4. As conference play has started UMD is going into the weekend 1-1 with three points. Omaha is coming into the series with two points as they are 0-1-1. On the season, UMD has gone 5-5 overall and 4-2 at home, compared to Omaha who is 4-4-2 overall, with a 3-0-1 away record. The Bulldogs last played the Mavericks on Jan. 21-22, 2022, where they split the series. Both teams came out of the weekend with a 5-1 win.
LAST TIME OUT This past weekend against Colorado College, UMD was shutout Friday in a 5-0 game, but bounced back Saturday night for a 3-1 victory. During Saturday's game,
Ben Steeves posted the first goal on the power play to tie the game up 1-1. With just under two minutes left in the game
Owen Gallatin scored the game winning goal. The Tigers then pulled their goalie in a last minute effort to take the Bulldogs to OT, but
Blake Biondi secured the win with an empty net goal.
Derek Daschke notched two assists, along with
Tanner Laderoute who had one assist. Gallatin had two points with his goal and an assist. Through the series
Matthew Thiessen made 36 saves, while only allowing one goal each night for a save percentage of .948.
THIESSEN AT THE TOP Senior
Matthew Thiessen has seen action in five of the 10 games played. In his time in net, Thiessen has made 92 saves while only allowing five goals, two of which were power play goals, for a save percentage of .948. With those numbers, Thiessen is ranked first in the NCHC and second in the nation for goals against average. He is also ranked first in the conference and fourth nationally for save percentage.
STRUGGLES ON THE POWER PLAY The Bulldogs have struggled with power-plays thus far in the season. Last weekend against CC, UMD went 1-for-7 on their power plays. As Minnesota Duluth has gone 8-37 with the man-advantage, they are ranked 8th in the conference and 29th in the nation.
STAYING OUT OF THE BOX Minnesota Duluth has been struggling with their penalty kills. In 10 games, the Bulldogs have gone on the penalty kill 42 times and allowed 11 goals for a percentage of .262. As Omaha is ranked fifth in the conference and 17th nationally for power play percentage, it will be crucial for UMD to stay out of the box.
STAYING IN THE POLLS After the split with unranked Colorado College, Minnesota Duluth dropped one spot to No. 20 in the USCHO National Poll.
OMAHA GOALTENDING The Mavericks have welcomed senior transfer Jake Kucharski. Kucharski has played in seven games, while starting in six of the 10. In the seven games, he has made 169 saves while allowing 16 goals. Kucharaski will go into the series with a .914 save percentage.
SLOW STARTERS Since the 2022-23 season has started, Omaha has had slow starts to a majority of their games, and picked up their momentum in the second period. Breaking down their 31 goals by period, four have come in the first period, 13 in the second, and 13 in the third. Of the games they have won, the Mavericks have out scored in the second period 5-4, and 7-1 in the third period. On the other hand though, Omaha's record during games they lost, they were out scored in the first 4-2, 7-4 in the second, and 3-3 in the third.
SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS Last weekend Omaha had their first conference series, where they faced-off with North Dakota. In game one they dropped the contest 4-1. During Saturday's game the teams were tied 3-3 through OT and went into a shoot out. Omaha took the extra point as Kucharski saved 2-3 shots. The Mavericks put in Ty Mueller and Tyler Weiss to take the first two shots, both of which were made. Going back to the Mavericks first game of the season, they started off strong with an exhibition against Minnesota State. Omaha topped MSU 7-2, after netting four goals in the second period. So far this season, UNO has scored 31 goals and allowed 27. They have made 294 shots on goal, compared to their opponents who have had 264. On the face-offs, they have a winning record of .522.
HOCKEY FIGHTS CANCER NIGHT Following Friday's military appreciation game, Saturday's game will highlight awareness surrounding men's mental health and help promote UMD Men's Hockey Movember Campaign. As November is Hockey Fights Cancer month, the teams will display accents of purple in support of the efforts being made.

TEDDY BEAR TOSS During Saturday's game on Nov. 12 there will be a teddy bear toss during the intermission. The teddy bears will be donated to children during the holiday season.
