Box Score The University of Minnesota Duluth dropped the first game of the weekend series to Colorado College in a 3-0 shutout. The Bulldogs are now 5-4 at home and 3-4 in NCHC conference play.
During Friday's game UMD killed off five penalties and only allowed 10 shots on goal during the Tigers power play.
Matthew Thiessen made 31 saves during the game, while only allowing two.
As the game got under way, period one was off to a slow start. The Bulldogs saw their first power play at the midpoint of the period. On the power play UMD got four shots on net, but couldn't find the back of the net. Later in the period UMD killed off their first penalty and held Colorado College to just two shots on net. Although the period was held scoreless, the Bulldogs out-shot the Tigers 16-7.
Early into the second period UMD went on a five minute power play. The Tigers went on a breakaway where UMD had a delayed penalty coming to them. Just before UMD could touch the puck Colorado College scored a short handed goal. With another penalty called on the Tigers, UMD had a two-man advantage for 42 seconds. The Bulldogs had some good shots on goal but again couldn't get on the board. 16 minutes into the second, the Tigers notched themselves another goal to take the lead 2-0. In the second period, UMD killed off three penalties. Though the 'Dogs were still held scoreless, they continued to out-shoot CC 16-11.
In the third period there were numerous penalties called. The Bulldogs killed off four of the Tigers power play opportunities. UMD had two power play opportunities and held the puck in the zone but couldn't get any shot on goal. Colorado College ended up out-shooting UMD 13-7, and held the Bulldogs scoreless through the third. UMD pulled the goalie with 1:15 left in the contest, in a late attempt to get on the board. With three seconds left the Tigers netted an empty net goal and shutout UMD.
UP NEXT The Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs will be back at AMSOIL Arena tomorrow night for the second game of the series. The puck will drop with Colorado College at 7:07 p.m.
