UMD MEN'S HOCKEY SET TO OPEN SEASON AT HOME AGAINST ARIZONA STATE

WELCOME BACK The No. 5 Minnesota Duluth men's hockey team will be back in action for the 2022-23 season this weekend for a home series against Arizona State. This will be the first game for UMD since their loss against Denver in the NCAA Regional Finals in Loveland, Colo.

THE MATCHUP This series will be the first ever match-up for Arizona State and Minnesota Duluth. Last season ASU went 17-17-1. On the road the Devils went 5-11-1. In the 2021 season, ASU had three series against NCHC teams, including two against Denver and one against Colorado College. Against the NCHC teams they were 1-5. The Devils took the win against Colorado College 5-2.

RETURNING FOR THE DEVILS Arizona State has a large group of veterans returning and have added some new faces. The Devils' leading goal scorer Matthew Kopperud will make another run this season. Kopperud recorded 40 points, with 22 goals and 18 assists. Sophomore Josh Doan was also a key component for ASU last season and will be making a return in the 2022-23 campaign. Doan had 12 goals and 25 assists to total 37 points.

NEW FACES NEW TALENT Minnesota Duluth will be going into the new season having lost some key players on the ice. The Bulldogs lost leading players Kobe Roth, captain Noah Cates, and goalie Ryan Fanti.  Though the Bulldogs may have lost some talent, the new faces bring loads of talent and have a promising future with the Bulldogs. UMD has brought on 11 new players (nine freshmen, and two transfers). The Bulldogs picked up Derek Daschke from Miami (OH) and Matthew Thiessen from Maine. Dashcke served as captain for the Redhawks and led for all-time goals scored by a defensemen.

CAPTAIN LADEROUTE Coming back for his fifth year, Tanner Laderoute will serve as captain for Minnesota Duluth. Laderoute is one of two Bulldogs left on the team that made the entire run for the national championship title. As a captain and veteran to UMD, he will look to bring his wealth of knowledge and leadership to bring the Bulldogs back to the Frozen Four.
