SODERBERG NAMED TO NATIONAL GOALIE OF THE YEAR WATCH LIST

For a third consecutive year, University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey goaltender Emma Soderberg has been named to the 2023 Women's Hockey Commissioners Association "Watch List" for the National Women's Goalie of the Year.

Soderberg was a 2022 National Goalie of the Year semifinalist last season and was named a top-8 finalist in 2021 as a junior. The Jarved, Sweden native and reigning Western Collegoate Hockey Association goaltender of the month is coming off of arguably one of her best overall series performance of the season, her effort crucial towards a Bulldog series sweep of then the No. 2 University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisc. over the weekend by scores of 3-1 and 1-0.

Soderberg -- who earns her third weekly honor of the season -- was outstanding for the Bulldogs, backstopping UMD to a series sweep despite facing a league-most 73 shots and making a WCHA-best 72 saves in 119:54 of action. The Jarved, Sweden product allowed just one goal Saturday and posted a shutout against the nation's top scoring team, her fifth clean sheet of the season. With 44 saves Saturday, Soderberg fell just two stops short of tying her career best, and it was the fifth time Soderberg has posted 40 or more saves in a game over her career. Soderberg's fifth shutout of the season also tied her for the fifth-most in a season by a UMD goaltender (she also had five shutouts in a season in 2021-22, and had six in 2020-21.  A graduate student, Soderberg also logged her 16th career shutout, tying her for the third-most in Bulldog history with fellow Sweden Olympian and UMD All-American Kim Martin. her 46th career win, and has now taken over sole possession of the sixth spot all-time for UMD netminders.

Among goaltenders that have played at least 1,000 minutes for the teams so far, Sodeberg ranks second in the NCAA with a 1.86 goals against average over 1,102 minutes. She is also tied for fourth in the NCAA with five shutouts, and was a heavy part of  UMD team shutout as well credited to the squad.

The National Goalie of the Year award was created in 2021 to recognize the top female netminder in NCAA Division I hockey. The goalies to watch come from all NCAA Division I conferences with 12 from the United States, nine from Canada, and six from Europe.  Conference offices submit candidates for the initial "Watch List" of outstanding goaltenders before a committee of voters – made up of a cross section of coaches, administrators, and media – will pare the list down within the next two weeks before ultimately choosing the winner. The 2023 Goalie of the Year is set to be announced in March during the NCAA Frozen Four.
