The Bulldogs started the game off quickly. UMD went on their first power play at 8:32. Just 17 seconds in, Kaiser connected with Olson behind the net. Loheit moved to the middle of the slot to make himself open to receive the pass from Olson, and fired a shot to the back of the net. With Loheit's one-timer on the power play, the Bulldogs had a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs went back on a power play at 14:47. Kaiser and Olson set up the same play for Steeves to score a power play goal and give the UMD a 2-0 lead. UMD would then take a minor penalty for charging. During the penalty kill, Laderoute was dumping the puck out of the defensive zone. Jacques was found up the ice and picked up the puck for a break-away and scored a short handed goal, extending the lead to three goals.
In the opening minutes of the second period, UMD took another minor penalty. Half way through the penalty kill, SCSU scored on the power play to put the game at 3-1. The Bulldogs took another penalty shortly after, where the Huskies would once again find the back of the net on their power play. As the game was 3-2, UMD was called for a five-minute major. After good defense for the first four minutes, UMD then drew a penalty to put play at 4-on-4 for the last minute. With the last minute being even strength, UMD would successfully kill off the major. As the period was coming to a close, Howard made a pass from the blue line to Gallatin. Gallatin made a shot from the side of the net and recorded the Bulldogs fourth goal of the game.
As the Bulldogs headed into the third period with a 4-2 lead, SCSU closed the gap to one at 13:25. Nearing the halfway point of the period, Spicer made a solid pass to Howard on the right wing. Alone on the wing, Howard fired a rocket in the back door. St. Cloud made a last minute attempt to close the gap and pulled their goalie. James found himself in the perfect position to steal a loose puck from a Husky skater and scored an empty net goal, sealing the deal 6-3.
UP NEXT Minnesota Duluth will be back at home next weekend Feb. 3-4 for a series against Western Michigan.
