Bulldog Soccer Hosts Last Regular Season Home Series Against SMSU and USF

The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team return home for the last time this regular season to take on Southwest Minnesota State University and the University of Sioux Falls.

In the Bulldogs three most recent games, they've managed two wins and, most recently, a tie against Northern State. With these positive results, they now rank seventh in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and sit in a position to make the NSIC Tournament. However, Sioux Falls, UMary, and Wayne State are only two points behind in the conference standings.

Southwest Minnesota State

The Mustangs are 3-8-1 this season (3-5-1 NSIC). They split last weekend with a 1-0 win over Winona State and a shutout loss against Concordia St. Paul. Earlier this month, SMSU lost to Sioux Falls, UMD's second opponent this weekend.

The Mustangs have had largely low-scoring affairs this season. Only one of their competitions has resulted in more than three total goals. Six games ended in SMSU getting shutout by their opponent.

Just four Mustang players have scored goals this season, with the most contributions from sophomore Haley Mason (3-1-7) and junior Alyson Gallagher (2-2-6).

The Bulldogs have lost in the teams' last three meetings, but currently rank higher and have shown an ability to score against similar opponents earlier this season.

UMD hosts SMSU Friday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. for Green Bandana Night, a student athlete-led mental health awareness campaign.

Sioux Falls

The Cougars are 3-7-2 (3-4-2) this season, with wins against Crookston, Winona State, and SMSU. They rank behind UMD due to more conference losses, but this weekend's match ups could move both teams up into playoff contention or down.

USF are currently on a two-game losing streak, getting shutout 3-0 by both Mankato and Augustana last weekend. They last scored Oct. 8 against SMSU.

Only one Cougar has scored multiple goals this season, senior Sarah Miller (3). Like SMSU, USF has only had one game this season totaling more than three goals.

In the last nine matchups between the Bulldogs and Cougars, UMD has a 6-0-3 record, tying 0-0 in their two most recent meetings. One goal could make all the difference this time around.

UMD welcomes USF Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. at Malosky Stadium.
