The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team returned to Malosky Stadium this afternoon for their second Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game of the weekend, taking on Minot State University.
The Bulldogs scored off a penalty shot in the first and defended their lead the rest of the way, ending the weekend 1-0-1 in conference play.
Shots were hard to come by for both teams to start the game. UMD recorded the first shot of the game over six minutes into the first half. MSU followed two minutes later.
As the game went on, the Bulldogs spent more time in the offensive zone, outshooting the Beavers but behind in shots on goal.
After a tripping call, Miriam Marsan took a penalty shot, aiming right as the goaltender jumped the other way. Marsan secured the lead, 1-0, with just over 25 minutes played.
The game pace continued, UMD leading shots 9-5 and shots on goal evening out 4-4 at half time.
MSU came back from the break determined to tie it up, getting three shots in the first five minutes.
The Bulldogs played most of the second half on defense, defending their one-goal lead. Scoring was still stalled thirty minutes into the half and UMD had yet to record another shot.
The Beavers led shots 17-9 and shots on goal 10-4 at the final whistle, but UMD managed to hold onto their lead.
The Bulldogs travel next weekend for more afternoon soccer next Friday, Oct. 13 at 3 p.m. versus Minnesota State Moorhead and Sunday, Oct. 15 versus Northern State at 1 p.m.
