The #8 University of Minnesota Duluth women's basketball team split games on their opening weekend of the 2023-24 regular season with a 49-77 loss to the University of Wisconsin Parkside Rangers.
First Quarter: UMD (16) - UWP (21)
UMD came out of the first quarter going 6-14 with a 42.9% field goal percentage and 2-3 on three point shots. Both teams tallied on 6 turnovers through the first 10 minutes, but the Bulldogs struggled with eight personal fouls resulting in the Rangers having 11 free throw attempts. The UMD defense did come up with two blocks, but the team could only get three total rebounds in an effort to keep up with the UWP scoring.
Second Quarter: UMD (30) - UWP (41)
The Bulldogs went 6-17 with a 35.3% field goal percentage in the second, but were able to cut down their personal fouls to just three total going into the half. They showed continued success with the long ball with another successful three point shot, but struggled to come up with the small buckets, only scoring six points in the paint compared to UWP's 14 points.
Third Quarter: UMD (40) - UWP (57)
Continued struggles on the scoring front continued to affect the Bulldog offense, despite improvements on getting to the ball with 12 total rebounds in the third quarter. UMD went 4-14 with a 28.6% field goal percentage, but caught one less personal foul compared to the Rangers and evened out their points in the paint with eight for both teams.
Fourth Quarter: UMD (49) - UWP (77)
The mountain to climb for the Bulldogs saw them receiving one less personal foul than UWP and almost perfection on free throws goin 2-3 on shots from the line. However, UMD could not find their footing on offense going 3-18 with a 16.7% field goal percentage and 4 points in the paint. UMD came up with five offensive rebounds, but had five defensive rebounds compared to the Rangers' 11.
Top Performers
Sophomore forward Lexi Karge went 4-11 with a 36.4% field goal percentage, leading the Bulldogs yet again with 10 total points. Senior guard Ella Gilbertson came away with a team high eight rebounds, while graduate student guard Taytum Rhoades and senior guard Taya Hakamaki both tallied three blocks.
