University of Minnesota Duluth football linebacker
Mac Strand was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Week Monday after leading the league in tackles in the No. 24 Bulldogs upset road win against No. 9 Minnesota State University, Mankato.
The product of Appleton Wis. had 16 tackles -- a career-best -- and 1.5 sacks -- also a career-high -- against the Mavericks, helping UMD's defense to hold MSU to just seven points in the second half Saturday. The junior LB has now recorded 50 tackles this season -- 35 of which have been solo efforts. Strand's four yards of loss on his 1.5 sacks against the Mavericks was also a season-best.
UMD upset MSU 33-21 in Mankato, Minn. to improve to 9-2 overall and 8-2 in NSIC play in 2023.
