The No. 7/9 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team knocked off No. 2 Colgate University 3-0 Friday night at AMSOIL Arena, and in the process, extended the Bulldogs current 10 game-winning streak against ECAC teams.
Â
The Bulldogs earned their fifth shutout of the season and first against a top-5 opponent with 29 saves from sophomore goaltender Hailey MacLeod, who also picked up the first shutout against a ranked squad over her short UMD career.
Â
UMD's offense found its sync in the second period and never looked back, starting with Clara Van Wieren's seventh goal of the season. Nina Jobst-Smith carried the puck in the zone and found Gabby Krause in the slot, and Krause slid the puck over to Van Wieren who buried it at 3:51 of the frame.Â
Â
At 18:26, the Bulldogs doubled that lead when Hanna Baskin hit Olivia Wallin from blueline to blueline, and Wallin did the rest. The senior forward carried the puck deep into the Raiders zone before finding Danielle Burgen on the top of the crease for the sophomore's first goal of the season.
Â
UMD's defense clamped down for good in the third, and Baskin and Wallin connected again on what would be the Bulldogs final goal at the 14:39 mark of the frame. Wallin ripped the puck off the boards backhanded and Reece Hunt got on the end of it at the blueline to beat Colgate netminder Hannah Murphy short side to take the 3-0 lead.
Â
"Colgate got some great looks, but I just felt like we had that second effort, or that third effort just to get a stick on it batted away," said UMD head coach Maura Crowell. "The puck was bouncing a little bit tonight, but you know that that helped us in those moments and the effort was there across the board. I thought everybody played really, really well tonight. The game plan was executed really well, and that's what we want to do when we do those things. We can play a really really great style of hockey, and I think our player saw that tonight and had a lot of fun with it, too."
Â
MacLeod was phenomenal in between the pipes en route to her fifth win of the season and second shutout. Murphy made 24 saves for the Raiders, who outshot UMD 29-27 and suffered just their second time this season to fall to 13-2-0 overall.
Â
UMD improves to 9-4-0 and will host Colgate Saturday afternoon to close out the series at 3:00 p.m.
