The Bulldogs started the period off having to kill off three penalties. At 5:34 UMD was called for their third penalty. During the penalty kill, Laderoute obtained the puck, passing it out of the defensive zone. Jacques, just outside the blueline, picked up the loose puck and took it up the left side of the ice on a break away. Jacques carried the puck around the top of the crease and pushed the puck past Magnus Chrona for a short handed goal. With a 1-0 lead, UMD was still on a penalty kill and the Pioneers found the back of the net to tie the game up. At the end of the period the game was tied 1-1, shots were 8-6 in Denver's favor.
At the beginning of the second period, Steeves gave the puck to Loheit who carried it up the right side and passed it off to James in the slot. James fired a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced to the right side. Loheit, still on the right side of the ice, picked up the rebound and fired it in the back door, putting the Bulldogs up 2-1. Shortly after taking the lead, UMD was called for a hooking penalty. Just under the halfway point of the period, the Pioneers found the back of the net on the power play and tied the game up once again. Roughly two minutes later, Denver would take the lead after scoring an even strength goal. The period was coming to a close and the Bulldogs were down by one. With 1:42 left on the clock, UMD drew a five minute major penalty for contact to the head to close out the period with the man-advantage.
The Bulldogs entered the period down by one, but still had 3:28 left in their power play. UMD took an early penalty just 44 seconds in to pause their power play. After a two-minute four-on-four, UMD returned to a 45 second power play, but the Pioneers killed it off and kept the Bulldogs at a one goal deficit. After the 7:08 mark, Denver would go on to score three additional goals, including an empty net goal, and closed out the game 6-2.
