Box Score The Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs fell 3-1 against the St. Cloud State Huskies in game three of the NCHC quarterfinals. For the first time since 2014, the Bulldogs will not make the NCAA tournament.
Scoring the lone goal tonight for the Bulldogs was
Luke Loheit with assists from
Dominic James and
Wyatt Kaiser.
The first period of the game was a physical one. Neither team took penalties through the first. UMD played a strong defensive game allowing the Huskies just four shots on goal. The Bulldogs had some good looks on net and got seven shots on goal, but nothing got by. The first period remained scoreless for both teams.
The Bulldogs got right back to work in the second period. Just 38 seconds into the period, the Bulldogs scored the first goal of the night. Kaiser brought the puck into the offensive zone and passed the puck behind him to James at the corner of the blueline. James connected with Loheit in the middle of the slot and he fired one to the back of the net. St. Cloud responded with back-to-back goals, just 14 seconds apart, to take the lead 2-1. UMD got their one and only power play attempt with 11:36 remaining. Half way through the power play, the Bulldogs were called for tripping. After a 56 second 4-on-4, the Huskies went on a short power play, in which the Bulldogs held them off. UMD was out-shot in the second period 21-11.
The third period remained scoreless for both teams and neither team took penalties. Stejskal was pulled from goal with 3:45 remaining and the Bulldogs fought until the very end but ultimately fell short 3-1.
While the Bulldogs' 2022-23 campaign comes to a close, they have plenty to be proud of this season and will return in October for a new season.
