The Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs dropped game two 4-3 in overtime against the St. Cloud State Huskies. The Bulldogs finished the regular season with an overall record of 15-18-1. With a conference play record of 10-14-0 and 33 points, the Bulldogs finish this season tied for fifth with North Dakota.
Scoring one goal each tonight for UMD was
Ben Steeves,
Isaac Howard, and
Owen Gallatin.
Dominic James recorded two assists, along with
Wyatt Kaiser,
Jack Smith, and
Will Francis each recording one. With his assist, Francis recorded his first career point.
In tonight's battle,
Zach Stejskal made 26 saves and the Bulldogs went 4-5 on the penalty kill.
The Bulldogs had another strong first period against the Huskies. UMD got an early momentum boost after killing off a penalty that came within the first minute of the game. The Bulldogs went on their first power play of the night just 7:24 into the period. Only nine seconds into the power play James made a short pass on the blueline to Kaiser. Kaiser then connected with Steeves in the faceoff circle who ripped a shot to the back of the net. Very shortly after taking a 1-0 lead UMD extended it. James gave the puck off to Francis in the middle of the slot. Francis fired a shot that hit the boards behind the goal and bounced to the feet of Gallatin who was waiting at the crease. Gallatin tipped the rebound in making it 2-0 UMD. With just under two minutes left in the period, Howard intercepted a SCSU pass in the neutral zone. He made a breakaway and scored the third unanswered goal. At the end of the first period shots on goal were tied 10-10 and UMD was up 3-0.
At the beginning of the second period, UMD was called for slashing putting them at a man-disadvantage. The Huskies scored their first goal 20 seconds into the power play. SCSU then followed it up with another goal at 4:38 and made it 3-2 UMD. The Bulldogs were called for tripping halfway through the period but they successfully killed it off. At the end of the second UMD led shots on goal 10-8 and the score was 3-2 in the Bulldogs favor.
The third period opened with an early power play for the Bulldogs. On a turnover St. Cloud scored a short handed goal and tied the game 3-3. UMD had another play opportunity present itself 4:32 into the period. With 28 seconds left with the man-advantage UMD was called for interference, giving St. Cloud a shortened power play. Both teams battled it out till the end of regulation to net another but the game went into overtime.
The Bulldogs struggled to find a groove during overtime. As the game clock had only 14 seconds left, the Huskies scored to take the win 4-3.
UP NEXT Minnesota Duluth will be back in St. Cloud next weekend to face the Huskies for the first round of NCHC playoffs. With the first round playoffs being best two-of-three they will play March 10-11, with a possible game on March 12 if needed.
