Duluth, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Duluth's men's hockey team has named fifth-year senior
Luke Loheit as the team's captain for the 2023-24 campaign, as announced Wednesday morning. Alongside Loheit, fifth-year forward
Quinn Olson and junior
Dominic James will serve as alternate captains in the upcoming season.
Loheit, a Minnetonka native, served as the assistant captain to
Tanner Laderoute and the Bulldogs in the 2022-23 season. In last year's campaign Loheit rolled off career-high season points (19), goals (8), and assists (11). Of his eight goals, three of them came with the man-advantage, marking his first power play goals. He also had the last minute game winning goal against North Dakota. After his stellar performance this last year where he scored more points than his first three years combined, he earned the Mike Sertich Award for UMD's most improved player. Loheir was also named to the NCHC All-Academic Team as a Distinguished Scholar Athlete.
Olson, the 2022-23 assistant captain, will wear the A for one more season. During last year's season Olson had another steady season with the Bulldogs. In his 37 games played, the forward notched seven goals and 17 assists for a season total 24 points. He potted two power play goals and one huge overtime game winning goal. He finished the 2022-23 season third on the team for assists and second for points.
Junior
Dominic James will wear the A for the first time during his career at UMD. James has been a consistent pulse for the Bulldogs over the last two seasons. After his successful rookie year, James also rolled off career-highs for his points (28), goals (10), and assists (18). The center was tied for first on the team for his 18 assists and 28 points and was second among the Bulldogs for his 10 goals. In the face-off circle James continues to lead the team in face-off wins as he finished the season 322-271.
The Bulldogs will open their season with a home game against the Michigan Tech Huskies on October 7, 2023 in Duluth.
