Box Score Today's dog-eat-dog game was a dramatic shift from Thursday for the University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team, as they faced off against a physical Michigan Technological University.
Despite a long-held lead, the Bulldogs left the field with a 1-1 tie and a 0-1-1 record to open the 2023 season.
Jackie Jares opened the scoring with a successful penalty kick a minute and a half into the game, shooting the ball into the unguarded lower left of the net.
The Huskies thought they'd tied it up later in the first half, but it was declared no goal and play resumed. Jennifer Norris made a decisive quick stop to the next offensive rush from MTU and turned the focus back to the other end of the field.
Physical play continued, both teams unafraid of battling up close for possession. UMD was stuck on defense at the end of the first half, but held strong and kept the score 0-1 going into the break.
Norris continued to ice out the Huskies early in the second, with a diving save five minutes into the half. The left goalpost also stopped a MTU free kick attempt.
The teams traded chances back and forth for the middle section, but MTU finally broke their scoring drought with a goal by freshman Brooke Green. Net front chaos after a corner kick led to the tying point with a little over twenty minutes left.
UMD continued to match the Huskies toe-for-toe until the final whistle, not backing down after losing the lead.
The Bulldogs play their home opener at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept 8. against St. Cloud State and then round out early season non-conference play against Northern State at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10.
