The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team traveled south to take on Concordia University, St. Paul this evening for another conference matchup. The two teams entered tied in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play, but the 4-1 loss left UMD with a 1-2-2 conference record, falling behind CSP.
The Bulldogs went scoreless in their last two games and entered today determined to break the drought. Jackie Jares had the best chances on goal from either team early on, but was unable to convert.
Lauren Hansen and Rachel Boelke both individually shut down offensive rushes from CSP. However, the Bulldogs were unable to stop a long shot from Corynn Grabau, one of the Golden Bear's leading scorers, from going in.
UMD looked to answer. Less than five minutes later, the Bulldogs took a corner kick and with sophomore Myra Moorjani perfectly positioned to head the ball into the net, UMD did just that.
Moorjani and Jares continued to pepper the goal, along with Anna Tobias, hoping to give the Bulldogs a lead.
The teams left the field at halftime, stalled at 1-1.
CSP pressured early in the second half. Boelke stopped an attempt by the Golden Bears near the net, but the ensuing corner kick got redirected in front and went in off the crossbar. Brittany Bordson was credited with the goal, her first of the season.
UMD was outshooting CSP, despite not holding a lead so far.
The Bulldogs tried to misdirect the Golden Bears on a free kick from Hansen, but it did not lead to the offensive pressure UMD needed.
With just over 25 minutes left, the ball deflected off Moorjani and CSP's lead was extended to 3-1.
The Bulldogs were still unable to regain their momentum, even with substitutions and a free kick from Boelke.
Golden Bear freshman Sophia Haase's footwork got her a clear shot at UMD's net, bringing the deficit to 4-1. In the last 13 minutes, the Bulldogs couldn't change the score.
The Bulldogs are on the road again Sunday, facing off against Minnesota State Mankato at 1 p.m.
