Selbitschka Enters Top 10 in All-Time Kills, No. 25 Bulldogs Slay Dragons

Being bestowed as one of the best hitters within University of Minnesota Duluth program, graduate outside hitter Cianna Selbitschka made history last season becoming the 23rd Bulldog to eclipse 1,000 collegiate kills. Tonight, she etched her name into the top 10 of the UMD hitting charts as the No. 25 Bulldogs extinguished Minnesota State University Moorhead in straight sets (25-11, 25-19, 25-8) at the Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn.

Selbitschka needed just five kills to surpass Anene Anderson (1991-95), who had 1,292 career kills, for sole possession of 10th place. The North Branch, Minn., native registered eight kills, and five of those in the final set, to take down the Dragons for ninth straight time and the seventh via a sweep.

The Bulldogs, who have victories in 18 of the last 19 meetings between the two clubs, won their third in a row and improved to 12-8 overall and 5-7 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. MSU Moorhead fell to 8-11 and 3-8 in the NSIC.

It was another strong overall effort as UMD finished off the match in one hour and five minutes. The Bulldogs corralled 46 kills and hit .407 on the night, the second highest hitting percentage of the season. UMD mustered 14 kills in the first, then a match-high 17 in the second before thumping home 15 more in the final frame. The Bulldogs didn't hit below .333 in any of the three sets and only had nine attack errors on the night.

It was quite the opposite for MSU Moorhead. The Dragons hit a season-low .047 and were also held to a season-low 21 kills. The MSUM offense accounted for just three kills in the third set and were held to a negative hitting percentage in the first and third sets. It was the third straight match UMD has held opponents to single-digit hitting percentage.

While Selbitschka accomplished the career top-10 feat, a few other Bulldogs grabbed career highlights as well.

Junior middle blocker Kylie Broten matched her career high in kills, slamming home a match-leading 12 kills and produced 14.5 points, a new career best. The Luck, Wis., native also had 12 kills against Wayne State College earlier this season. Broten also capped off the night going 12-for-16 with zero errors to sport a .750 hitting percentage. That is the highest hitting clip recorded by a Bulldog this season with at least 10 swings.

Senior outside hitter Payton Addink dished out four service aces out-doing her career effort from Tuesday night when she compiled a then-career high three aces against Bemidji State University.

Freshman middle blocker Elyse Karrels hammered home six kills in her third career outing. The Port Washington, Wis., native doubled her production that she posted against the University of Minnesota Crookston back on Oct. 19.

The Bulldogs conclude the weekend with a road contest against No. 22 Northern State University tomorrow afternoon at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, S.D. First serve versus the Wolves, who lost in three sets to No. 3 St.Cloud State University, will take place at 3:00 p.m.
