UMD Volleyball Falls Short on Senior Day to Winona State

The University of Minnesota Duluth ended the 2024 season with a 3-1 defeat to Winona State University (25-22, 27-29, 21-25, 13-25) Saturday afternoon at Romano Gymnasium.

The match was a farewell to eight seniors who played in their final collegiate match. The 2024 senior class includes outside hitter Payton Addink, middle blocker Ellie Dammann, setter Maddi Kealy, defensive specialist Emma Kujawa, libero Kaylyn Madison, defensive specialist Kiley Nihart, right side hitter Samantha Paulsen and outside hitter Cianna Selbitschka.

The Bulldogs finished the season 15-11 overall and 8-10 in the NSIC.

After a gutsy set one victory, UMD was on the verge of taking a commanding 2-0 lead before the Warriors stormed back to take a chaotic second set that needed more then the normal 25 points to find a winner. Winona State (18-11, 11-7 NSIC) battled back and took the following two sets to close out their regular season with momentum towards the NSIC Tournament.

The Warriors outhit the Bulldogs .206-.134. WSU's Kenna Kornely and Sidney Paulson each had 13 kills to lead all players. Paulsen paced the Bulldogs with 12 kills and Selbitschka notched 11 kills. Sophomore right side hitter Madeline Guetzkow posted 10 kills to round out the Bulldog double-digit kill producers.

Graduate libero Kaylyn Madison etched her name farther up the all-time digs leaderboard passing Rhaya Tombelin for fourth. Madison picked up a match-high 18 digs and finished her career with 1,538 digs.

Junior middle blocker Kylie Broten racked up eight blocks on the day, which is a new season high for the team and a career high for the Luck, Wis., native.

Senior setter Maddi Kealy and Selbitschka each gathered double-doubles. Kealy whipped up 18 assists and 11 digs for her sixth double-double. Selbitschka added 11 digs with her 11 kills for her team leading 10th double-double.
