Defensive Effort Leads Bulldogs Past Rangers, UMD Men’s Basketball Defends their Undefeated Season

The University of Minnesota Duluth men's basketball team held the University of Wisconsin-Parkside to just 32.1% from the field and a 3-for-22 three point shooting performance on the way to a 73-43 victory over the Rangers at home in Romano Gymnasium.

After falling behind 2-0 to start the matchup, the Bulldogs went on a 17-0 run with 18:52 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Andrews, to take a 17-2 lead. UMD then went on to lose some of that lead, getting outscored 19-18 through the final 13 minutes of the half, but still entered the break with a 35-21 advantage. The Bulldogs did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 26 of its 35 points close to the basket.

 

UMD was able to keep widening their lead following the halftime intermission, expanding it to 46-28 through the opening six minutes of the half. The Bulldogs would follow it up by going on a 17-0 run, finished off by Jayden Johnson's three, to grow the lead to 63-28 with 6:02 to go in the contest. The Rangers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but UMD still cruised the rest of the way for the 73-43 win.

 

Bulldog Notes vs. UWP

 

The Bulldogs had four players score in double figures, led by Austin Andrews, who had 14 points and six rebounds. Charlie Katona added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds and Caleb Siwek chipped in as well with 12 points.

 

Katona pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace the UMD offense who grabbed 12 offensive boards and turned them into nine second chance points.

 

UMD did a fantastic job disrupting Wisconsin-Parkside shots in the contest, coming away with six total blocks. Katona's two rejections led the way individually for the Bulldogs.

 

The Bulldogs never trailed in the second half on its way to victory with their bench making a significant impact, making up 25 points of the team's total scoring output.

 

Looking Ahead

 

Bulldog men's basketball (3-0, 0-0 NSIC) will host the inaugural St. Louis County Classic tournament next weekend where they will face off against the Michigan Tech Huskies and the Northern Michigan Wildcats. Tip-off against the Huskies is currently set for Friday, Nov. 22, at 6:00 PM.
