Service Game Hampers Bulldog Volleyball in 3-1 Loss to No. 8 Concordia-St. Paul

The downfall Friday night for the University of Minnesota Duluth can be summed up in two words.

Service game.

The Bulldogs accounted for 10 service errors and 13 reception errors as they fell in four sets (17-25, 25-17, 15-25, 20-25) to No. 8 Concordia University, St. Paul in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action at the Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul, Minn.

The Golden Bears (19-4 overall, 14-1 NSIC) were out hit and out dug in the contest by UMD (14-10, 7-9 NSIC) but were aided in 23 miscues at the service line. The Bulldogs won offensively as they outpaced CSP .212-.190 in the attacking game. It was the first time this season the Golden Bears won a match in which they posted the lower hitting percentage. UMD also amassed 52 digs to Concordia-St.Paul's 51.

Senior outside hitter Payton Addink led the charge for the Bulldogs. Addink registered her second double-double of her career -- first of the season -- on 12 kills and 12 digs. Addink's totals were both team highs as the Sun Prairie, Wis., native hit .346 on the night and added a block to the stat sheet.

Sophomore right side hitter Madeline Guetzkow was the other lone Bulldog in double digits offensively. Guetzkow nailed home 10 kills on 20 swings and didn't have a hitting error to her name. The Mayer, Minn., native also collected four blocks and four digs.

The Golden Bears, who have won 13 straight contests, had six blocks and four aces in the opening set. A polarizing second set saw a complete 180 from the first set. UMD responded with hitting .400 in the second and sent the match into intermission on an 8-0 run with a convincing 25-17 set two win. The Bulldogs provided the block in the frame, compiling four blocks including the season's first triple block and a set-clinching double block by junior middle blocker Kylie Broten and Guetzkow. Broten had a team-leading five blocks.

The Golden Bears were still reeling from the second set and were down 10-7 before CSP needed a timeout in third. A successful regrouping spurred the Golden Bears into a 14-2 run and an easy third set win. UMD tried to rally again and started the fourth set on a 6-1 run. That lead chipped away as UMD unraveled allowing six aces and faulting into four service errors of its own. The Bulldogs mounted a late rally as they fended off four match points and forced the Golden Bears to call timeout and rethink their strategy. The Bulldogs dropped the following point ending any hope of knocking off the eighth-ranked Bears for the first time on the road since 2019.

UMD closes out its last regular season road match of the season tomorrow at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The opening serve against the Mavericks will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Taylor Center in Mankato, Minn.
