UMD Men’s Basketball Staves Off Vikings in 70-61 Victory at Home

The University of Minnesota Duluth men's basketball team remained undefeated on their home court tonight in Romano Gymnasium, backing down the Augustana University Vikings 70-61 to open their three game Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) homestand.

 

Final Score: UMD (70) - AU (61)

 

UMD started out the scoring by going on a 9-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Andrews, to take an early lead with 15:41 left in the first half. The Bulldogs maintained that lead throughout the rest of the period and entered halftime with a 38-29 advantage. The Bulldogs relied on their three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots from beyond the arc to account for 18 of their 38 points.

 

Augustana rallied to open the second half, out-scoring the Bulldogs 23-12 in the opening nine and a half minutes to take a 52-50 lead. UMD went on to collect 11 unanswered points to seize a 61-52 lead with 8:03 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 70-61 win.

 

Bulldog Notes vs. AU

 

The Bulldogs had three players score in double figures, led by Caleb Siwek, who had 25 points and seven rebounds. Austin Andrews tacked on 14 points and five assists and Mattie Thompson helped out with 11 points and four blocks.

 

The UMD offense was very productive from beyond the arc, knocking down eight threes on 23 attempts. Siwek was the most prolific shooter for the Bulldogs, draining six three balls throughout the contest.

 

The Bulldogs did a great job disrupting Augustana's shots in the contest, coming away with six total blocks. Thompson's four rejections led the way individually for the Bulldogs.

 

Looking Ahead

 

Bulldog men's basketball returns tomorrow for game two of their homestand against the Wayne State College Wildcats. Tip-off against the Wildcats is currently set for 5:30 PM.
