Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

No. 19 Arizona State Stuns Bulldogs in Overtime in Final NCHC Game of 2024

It was an overtime heartbreak for the University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey team Saturday night inside Mullet Arena in Tempe, Ariz. after No. 19 Arizona State University scored with just under 19 seconds left in overtime. The result was a stinging 3-2 setback against the Sun Devils, despite the Bulldogs having owned the run of play almost the entire game.

After a scoreless first period where UMD outshot ASU 13-5, the Sun Devils struck first at 15:48 on a goal from Dylan Jackson. That score would hold until 5:18 of the third period when Max Plante sniped into a wide open net to pull the Bulldogs even at 1-1.

The Sun Devils retook the 2-1 lead just over three minutes later on a extra effort goal from Ryan Kirwan, but again, the Bulldogs would answer. Freshman forward Zam Plante scored his fourth goal of the season to draw UMD an even 2-2, a score that would hold through the end of regulation.

But despite the Bulldogs extensive overtime work, the Sun Devils landed a game-winning punch with just 19 seconds left to defeat UMD 3-2.

The Bulldogs, who picked up an National Collegiate Hockey Conference point with the regulation tie, outshot ASU 35-28 in the contest. UMD also blocked 12 shots compared to 11 by the Sun Devils, and goaltender Zach Sandy, who made just the third start of his collegiate career, had 25 saves. ASU got 33 saves from Zach Pavicich, and improve to 8-7-1 overall and 5-3-0 in conference play.

While UMD (5-10-0, 2-6-0) has wrapped up its 2024 NCHC play, it will have one more non-conference game in 2024 when it travels to Bemidji State University on Tuesday, Dec. 31. Game-time is set for 7:07 p.m.

BULLDOG NOTES: Max Plante now has six points in his first five collegiate games this season (2g, 4a), and had back-to-back goals against ASU in the series … in all, Plante had three points against the Sun Devils (2g, 1a) figuring in over half of UMD's goals on the weekend (five) … three defenseman had assists Saturday – Aiden Dubinsky, Luke Bast and and Aaron Pionk, who now has a team-best 12 helpers on the season.
