The University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey team took on the University of Nebraska Omaha for the second game of the away series tonight, but fell short in the final minute. While UMD made clear improvements from Friday, the game still ended 4-3 in UNO's favor.
Every goal the Bulldogs scored was only able to tie the score or bring them within one. Alternate Captain Connor McMenamin nullified the Mavericks' first goal, which came just 17 seconds after puck drop. Between the circles, the graduate student caught a pass from Matthew Perkins, spun himself and scored. The pair reversed their roles from yesterday's goal.
UMD shortened the UNO lead twice in the third period. After a called-back goal Friday, Blake Biondi made sure this one counted, soundly sending in a rebound.
Thirty seconds after the Bulldogs pulled goaltender Matthew Thiessen, UNO found the back of the empty net. It took pulling Thiessen a second time for UMD to capitalize. Shortly after he made it to the bench, Perkins scored. He tipped a Luke Bast shot for his second goal of the weekend.
Fifty five seconds wasn't enough time for the Bulldogs to score another one. It all came down to one last faceoff which won back with two seconds left. Ben Steeves got a shot off, but there was no time to send the rebound in.
UMD was ahead shots on goal 38-29 at the final buzzer, after leading the stat all game. Team-leading goal scorer Ben Steeves once again had the most shots (11), followed by defenseman Owen Gallatin (8) and Darian Gotz (6).
Overall, the game looked very different from Friday. The Bulldogs were competitive on the faceoff dot, leading in faceoff wins after twenty minutes. Sophomore Jack Smith won all five of his battles in the first period.
Tonight, penalties were a lot harder to come by. Only two were awarded, one to each team for roughing at the very end of the second. Biondi's goal came on during the ensuing 4-on-4 play.
UMD plays again at home in two weeks, taking on Denver at 8:07 p.m. on Friday, February 16 and 7:07 p.m. on Saturday, February 17.
