Baseball Tallies 14 Runs on the Day to Split Final Doubleheader with USF

The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team finishes off their weekend return to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play, splitting their final doubleheader against the University of Sioux Falls Cougars and going 2-2 over the four game series.

Game One: UMD (5) - USF (6)

A defensive showdown between the two teams would keep the scoring silent until the third inning, with the Bulldogs capitalizing on their smart base running with a few base hits to tally three runs on the board. The Cougars would take their shot to answer in the following half inning, tallying two runs of their own on a double out to center field. The bats for the Bulldogs would quiet down as USF continued to heat up, adding on three more runs over the next three innings to take a 5-3 lead. A two run homer from Kade Peloquin in the seventh would tie things up as the game neared the end, but a strong single up the middle from the Cougars would walk it off for them in the ninth inning.

Game Two: UMD (9) - USF (8)

USF would keep the Bulldogs blanked throughout the first four innings of game two as they would be able to tally five runs for themselves. A Henry Bushey solo home run in the fifth would be the catalyst for the Bulldog offense that would eight more runs throughout the sixth and seventh innings on a series of base hits and smart base running on errors, while holding the Cougars to only one run throughout the same time. The Cougars would knock in a two run homer to get within one, but it would be too little too late as the Bulldogs would hold them off to secure a win in their final game of the weekend.

Looking Ahead

Bulldog baseball will head back to Sioux Falls next weekend, this time for a four game series against the Augustana University Vikings. First pitch versus the Vikings is scheduled for Friday, Mar. 22, at 4:00 PM.
