Baseball Loses Hard Fought Doubleheader on Final Day of Series Against Augustana

The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball completed their four game weekend slate this afternoon against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) rival Augustana University, falling to the Vikings in both games of today's doubleheader.

Game One: UMD (8) - AUG (9)

Back to back home runs for the Vikings would open up the scoring in game one for the second day of the series, getting Augustana out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. The Bulldogs would be quick to respond in the second, getting two run shots from Jack Nemetz and Michael Gabbard to get UMD back within one. Infielder Ethan Cole would follow it up in the third, connecting on a leadoff solo home run to tie things up. A quiet fourth inning would serve as a break in the action before the Bulldogs would get right back into scoring position in the fifth, collecting their first lead of the day on a wild pitch. It wouldn't stop there either as UMD would shut down the Vikings in the bottom of the fifth and give Gabe Richardson a chance to increase the lead in the sixth with the Bulldog's third two run homer of the game. The Vikings would not go down without a fight though, collecting four runs off a wild pitch and a three run homer in the bottom of the inning and securing a one run lead to close out the first game of the day.

Game Two: UMD (1) - AUG (11)

The Bulldogs would get out to a quick start in game two, tallying their first run on a RBI double from Ethan Cole to get out to an early 1-0 lead. However, that would be the end of the Bulldogs' scoring effort as the Vikings would collect 11 runs on five hits and two home runs over the next four innings, closing out the final game of the series.

Looking Ahead

The Bulldogs are scheduled to play their 2024 home opener at Wade Stadium next week against the MSU Mankato Mavericks. The first pitch is currently set for Thursday, Mar. 28, at 1:30 PM.
