The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team is heading out on the road for a non-conference matchup against fellow Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) member this weekend, the Northern State University Wolves.
Match Information
Sunday, Sept. 15
1:00 PM CST @ Northern State
Last Time Out
The Bulldogs opened their 2024 season with a pair of hard fought, non-conference losses against the Northern Michigan Wildcats and the Michigan Tech Huskies.
UMD's 1-6 defeat to the reigning GLIAC champions came with a highlight goal from junior forward Maria Zanotti in the 79th minute, giving herself her first career goal as a Bulldog and UMD's only goal of the weekend.
The Bulldogs fought a physically defensive game against Michigan Tech, keeping the Huskies scoreless until the second half. Despite some opportunities on the other side, the goal posts would be the enemy of UMD's offensive tries and keep them shutout to end the weekend.
Scouting Report - Northern State
The Northern State Wolves are also out to a rocky start of their 2024 season, opening their schedule with a 0-3 loss to Drury University before pushing Missouri Western State to a 1-1 draw on Sunday.
The Bulldogs faced off against Northern twice last season, pulling out an 3-1 victory in early September before taking a 2-2 draw in October. The two teams played a pair of aggressive games against each other, tallying up a combined four yellow cards and an ejection throughout both matches, and saw the Bulldogs scoring three of their four goals on penalty kicks.
UMD is 19-2-3 against the Wolves throughout their program history, and 8-1-2 against the Wolves since 2013. NSU finished third in the NSIC regular season standings in 2023, but fell in the first round of the tournament to the University of Mary.
Looking Ahead
Bulldog soccer will return to Duluth on Friday, Sept. 20, for their first home conference matchup against the St. Cloud State University Huskies. The game is currently scheduled to start at 6:00 PM.
