UMD Men’s Basketball Falls 86-78 to WSU on the Road

The University of Minnesota Duluth men's basketball team kicked off another week of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) matchups tonight, falling to the Winona State University Warriors 86-78 on the road.

After falling behind 13-12 to open the night, UMD went on an 8-0 run with 9:35 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Nick Katona, to take a 20-13 lead. The Bulldogs surrendered that lead, getting out-scored 27-13 throughout the final minutes and entering halftime down 40-33.

 

WSU continued to widen its lead after intermission, constructing a 66-52 advantage before UMD collected seven unanswered points, finished off by Nick Katona's three, to shrink the deficit to 66-59 with 9:31 to go in the contest. The Warriors responded and outscored the Bulldogs the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 86-78. UMD got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 16 of its 45 total points.

 

Bulldog Notes vs. WSU

 

The Bulldogs had four players score in double figures, led by Jayden Johnson, who had 16 points and five assists. Austin Andrews tacked on 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists and Charlie Katona chipped in as well with a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds.

 

The UMD offense still found success across the court, lighting it up from three point land with nine threes throughout the game. The Bulldog bench also made a significant impact, adding 26 points to the scoring output.

 

UMD pulled down 38 rebounds compared to Winona State's 30, led by Katona's 15 boards. The Bulldogs also cleaned up on the offensive glass, turning 10 rebounds into 13 second chance points.

 

Looking Ahead

 

Bulldog men's basketball (13-7, 8-6 NSIC) will return to Romano Gymnasium this Saturday for a revenge matchup against the Concordia St Paul Golden Bears. Tip-off against the Golden Bears is currently set for 1:00 PM.
