No. 15 Bulldogs Secure Second-Straight Sweep with Win Over Minot State

The No. 15 University of Minnesota Duluth Volleyball Team posted its second-straight league sweep with a 25-15, 25-14, 25-14 win over Minot State (2-14, 0-7) Saturday morning at Romano Gymnasium. Freshmen Kendra Behrens and Ella Chandler made their collegiate debuts in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) victory, helping the Bulldogs move to 13-1 overall and 6-1 in conference play.

Behrens and Chandler had three kills and two kills, respectively, while senior Kylie Broten and junior Madeline Guetzkow each had seven kills to lead UMD's offense. Broten hit .545 and added two assists and three total blocks, and Guetzkow had seven digs and five block assists. Sophomore Xada Johnson had six kills, four digs and four total blocks, and redshirt freshman Grace Mueller had three kills and a career-high seven block assists. Madison Reed had a career-high six service aces and led all players with 13 digs.

The Bulldogs had 11.0 team blocks compared to just 4.0 for the Beavers and 10 service aces to MSU's five. UMD also hit .272 compared to the visitor's -.020 and had 36 kills to their 22.

It took a little while for UMD to gain momentum in the first set, but when it did it cruised out to a 13-7 lead and forced a Minot State timeout. During the 10-1 run, the Bulldogs got three kills from Broten and two kills from Jones. Minot State pulled within four points, 16-12, but a 4-0 run from the Maroon and Gold extended it lead back to eight points, 20-12. UMD would then close out the set with another 4-0 run, including back-to-back service aces from Reed. The Bulldogs had seven team blocks in the opening frame, which included four block assists from Mueller, three block assists from Guetzkow and three total blocks from Johnson.

It was all UMD to begin the second set, as it jumped out to an early 5-1 lead that would eventually move to an 18-8 advantage. That's when head coach Jim Boos started to bring in his rookies. Behrens was first to come in and registered a kill right away. Brietta Tims and Karsyn Winchell were next to come in and help the Bulldogs take a 2-0 lead in the match. Georgia Koscielak had two service aces in the set, and Mueller added three block assists to her total. Guetzkow was the team leader with three kills, while Winchell and Reed each had five digs to lead to squad.

The third set stayed pretty even through the first 25 points, but when Reed went back to serve at 14-12 the Bulldogs took control of the match. Reed once again tallied back-to-back service aces, then UMD got kills from Broten, Guetzkow and Tims, before two more aces from Reed made the score 21-12. Chandler then entered the match and immediately put the home team ahead 22-12 with her first-career kill. She added her second kill of the match to end the match, 25-14.

UMD begins a three-match roadtrip Friday, Oct. 10 when it heads to Aberdeen, S.D. for a league match-up vs. No. 24 Northern State at 6 p.m. It will then take on the University of Jamestown in Jamestown, N.D., Saturday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. The roadtrip will wrap up with a Thursday contest at Minnesota Crookston on Oct. 16 at 6 p.m.
