The University of Minnesota Duluth men's basketball team has earned its second victory of the 2025-26 season with its second victory in the 2025 GAC/NSIC Challenge. The second round of the challenge featured Southeastern Oklahoma State University, which was overpowered by the Bulldogs 84-61.
UMD was led by three Bulldogs in double-digit points, including
Caleb Siwek (20),
Jackson Fowlkes (16), and
Nick Katona (11). Katona managed a double-double with 12 rebounds and 11 points.
Entering the first half, the Bulldogs rattled off a 10-2 scoring run between
Mattie Thompson, Katona, and Fowlkes. The following five minutes saw an even 13-13 scoring run to still maintain the UMD lead at 23-15. In that time frame, the ball rapidly changed hands five times, with two steals by the Bulldogs and three by Southeastern Oklahoma.
At the ten-minute mark, UMD was three for five in three-pointers between Fowlkes (2) and Katona. The next two minutes, the Bulldogs put up eight unanswered points, but the final ten minutes saw the Savage Storm chip away at the UMD lead all the way down to 36-29 before halftime.
Coming out of the break, UMD picked up where they left off, going on a 24-20 run in the first ten minutes, including Siwek scoring nine points. With a 63-49 lead, Siwek,
Owen Leach, and Katona combined for an unanswered ten points to mark a staggering 24-point lead over the Savage Storm with 7:37 left. From then on, the match would see the Bulldogs hold on, only allowing 12 more points by Southeastern Oklahoma, finishing with a final score of 84-61.
The team combined for a 49.2% field goal percentage and 42.1% from the three-point line. UMD dominated fast break points with 10 to the Savage Storms' four while also doubling points off turnovers with 26 to their 10.
The Bulldogs return to Duluth for their first home game of the 2025-26 season, featuring the College of St. Scholastica on Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
