UMD Men’s Basketball Overcomes Wisconsin-Superior 81-50 in Exhibition Matchup

The University of Minnesota Duluth men's basketball team hosted its only exhibition matchup of the preseason, overcoming the University of Wisconsin Superior Yellowjackets 81-50 inside Romano Gymnasium.

The Bulldogs got out ahead on a 13-4 run within the first six minutes of action, including Kole Hanson starting off the match with a three-point shot just sixteen seconds after tip-off. This run put UMD firmly ahead with a continued double-digit effort over the next ten minutes, with a 29-13 run for a staggering 42-17 halftime score. Jackson Fowlkes led the Bulldog effort in the first half with ten points scored, including an answered three-point shot four seconds before the halftime break.

After halftime, the Bulldogs picked right up where they left off, going on a 23-13 run in the first ten minutes. This put UMD in a dominant 65-30 lead, but the following ten minutes saw a revitalized Yellowjacket effort nearing the Bulldogs' scoring effort in a 20-18 run. A 40% field goal percentage by UWS in the second half proved not enough to topple UMD, sealing the final score at 81-50.

Overall, as a team, the Bulldogs led in nearly every category, including going 30 of 64 (46.9%) in field goals and making 14 of 17 free throws (82.4%).

Hanson and Fowlkes led the offense with 12 points each. Defensively and offensively, Daniel Molhoek led the day in rebounds with six on defense and three on offense. Molhoek also earned a block to round out his defensive stats. Mattie Thompson and Nick Katona each earned three steals to help keep the Yellowjackets off balance.

The Bulldogs' first regular-season game is set for November 14th on the road against East Central University in Durant, Oklahoma. This will be one of two matchups UMD will face in the GAC/NSIC Challenge, with the second game set for the following night against Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
