Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

No. 5 Bulldogs Ride Offensive Rally to Bounce Bemidji State 4-1

The No. 5 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team may have started slow Friday night in the Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minn., but the Bulldogs came to boil with four unanswered goals to defeat Bemidji State University 4-1 in game one of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association series.

It was the Beavers that scored the lone goal of the first period, 9:50 into the frame from Olivia Dronen. For the 12th time this season, UMD's offense couldn't breakthrough in the opening 20 minutes, and the Bulldogs trailed BSU 1-0.

But red-hot rookie Rae Mayer unloaded the equalizer from below the right dot at 9:50 of the second period to pull even at 1-1. Then at 18:17 of the frame, Caitlin Kraemer's hustle below the goal led to a backhanded pass that ended up on the stick of Thea Johansson in the low slot. The senior sniper shoveled the puck past BSU goaltender Ava Hills to take UMD's first – and last lead – of the game.

The Bulldogs tacked on to that lead 5:25 into the third period when Grace Sadura was sprung from the neutral zone by Johansson and the junior forward did the rest, beating Hills low glove-side for the 3-1 advantage.

Junior defenseman Ida Karlsson iced the game with 1:12 left in the third on a 6-on-4 penalty kill and empty net Beaver effort by clearing the puck nearly the length of the ice into the empty Beaver net to secure UMD's first shorthanded goal of the season and set the 4-1 final.

Eve Gascon was massive for the Bulldogs in net, making 30 saves on BSU, who outshot the Bulldogs 31-27 in the contest. Neither team was successful in two power play attempts – Hills had 23 saves on the night for BSU.

UMD (11-6-0, 7-6-0) will put the wraps on the 2025 portion of its season Saturday afternoon in Bemidji. Game-time is set for 3:02 p.m.

BULLDOG NOTES: Thea Johansson led all scorers with two points on a game-winning goal and an assist … it was Johansson fifth multiple point outing of the season and third-straight game with at least a point … Johansson has one goal and three assists over her last three games … Eve Gascon has now had seven games with 30 or more saves … the junior goaltender has made 30 or more saves in four of her last five games.
