Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Bulldogs and No. 10 Arizona Settle for 3-3 Overtime Tie

For a second-straight night, the University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey team and No. 10 Arizona State University battled into overtime, but unlike last night, both teams settled for a 3-3 tie Saturday night at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, Minn.

The Bulldogs pocketed another National Collegiate Hockey Conference point but the Sun Devils took the league shootout for the extra point.

"It was a good weekend and they're a good hockey team, every game has been a one goal game with three overtime games with them, with an empty net goal they got in the first game, so pretty even with them in four games," said UMD head coach Scott Sandelin. "I really liked our start, it was really good for the first 10 minutes, we grabbed the lead. We were playing on our toes, we were north, I think we were doing exactly what we wanted to do to start the game and, obviously the bonus was scoring, the goal, you know, Ty's goal."

Ty Hanson opened the game's scoring after he took a feed from Adam Kleber from the red lion and skated through the left circle and unloaded on ASU goaltender Gibson Homer for his fourth of the season at 2:52 of the opening frame.

The Sun Devils equalized at the 10:18 mark on the first of Artem Shhlaine's two goals on the night and after 20 minutes of action, both the game and the shots on goal (nine each)were knotted up.

Almost six minutes into the second period, UMD retook the lead on a tap in rebound from Kleber, his second of the season. But the Sun Devils struck twice – Kyle Smolen at 8:55 and a power play tally for Shalaine at 14:38 to pocket the 3-2 advantage after two periods of play.

Max Plante had other ideas, however, and 11 seconds into the third period, the speedy forward popped one past Homer from the left face-off dot to pull the Bulldogs even at 3-3.

The Bulldogs battled both the Sun Devils and the box in the third, even killing off a 5-on-3 at about the 8:06 mark – the fourth penalty on UMD of the period. The score didn't budge, however, and for a second time on the weekend and third time this season, the Bulldogs and Sun Devils needed overtime to try and find a winner.

ASU outshot UMD 5-3 in the extra five minutes, but both teams had to settle for the official tie. The Sun Devils won the ensuing shootout for the extra NCHC point.

Bulldog goaltender Klayton Knapp had a 41-save performance, just one save shy of his career high of 42 set last month. For the first time in four games this season, ASU outshot UMD 44-35, but the Bulldogs kept the Sun Devils 1-of-7 on its power play. Homer had 32 stops for ASU, who is now 17-11-2 and 12-7-1 in conference play.

UMD (11-15-2, 7-10-1) will hit the road to Grand Forks, N.D. next weekend to face the University of North Dakota. The Friday-Saturday series will get under Friday at 7:07 p.m.

BULLDOG NOTES: Rookie defenseman Ty Hanson had two points Saturday night (1g, 1a), and an assist Friday for a three point weekend … Hanson figured in half of the UMD goals scored against the Sun Devils … Saturday was the second time this season Hanson has recorded two points (Miami on Nov. 16, also a goal and assist was the other) … Hanson was one of three defenseman to score in the series, and one of two to score Saturday night … Adam Kleber was the other … Max Plante extended his current scoring streak to four games … the freshman has five points (1g, 4a) over his last four skates … UMD ends the regular season against ASU 1-2-1, and is now 3-2-1 all-time against the Sun Devils.
